On Sunday, August 6, 2006 over 250 bicycle racers battled for victory over a grueling day of women’s, and men’s, professional and amateur cycle races on the historic grounds of Washington, DC’s RFK Stadium in Southeast Washington, DC. Hub Racing’s 4th Annual City Bikes RFK Criterium Bicycle Race brought many of the world’s best criterium cyclists to Washington, DC for a full day of high-paced racing action on the vaunted Grand Prix course at RFK Stadium on Sunday.

The Hub Racing Women’s Challenge was the feature event for the day. An international field of top ranked professional women cyclists came to the Nation’s Capital to compete for the $5000 purse. Team Lipton superstar and Pennsylvania native Laura Van Gilder won the $1000 top prize, ahead of New Zealand’s Melissa Holt (Team Colavita/Cooking Light) and Canadian Anne Samplonius (Team Biovail). Van Glider’s Lipton teammate, Sarah Caravella, won the field sprint to take fifth place in the finish of the much anticipated Women’s Challenge.

Host club Hub Racing took the top 2 podium spots in two of the day’s races. Development rider Mark Plotz won the category 5 men’s race followed by teammate Jeremy Jo. Later in the afternoon Hub Racing’s Becky Broeder crossed the line only inches ahead of and hand in hand with her teammate Brooke O’Connor to win the Women’s Master (age 30+) event while Hub Racing team captain Sheba Farrin won the field sprint to take sixth overall. Broeder and O’Connor would both also place in the top 20 in the featured Hub Racing Women’s Challenge later in the day. Broeder’s victory in the Master’s race gave her three victories across the last two weekends, having won twice in Arizona the week before.

The City Bike RFK Criterium benefited the Doug Gordon Memorial Easter Seals Fund.
