super week womens pro tour
race 13 of 14
saturday july 25th 2009
Humboldt Prk Criterium
as promised, break attempts went from the gun. attack after
attack went up the shallow hill, but it was the yellow
jersey that established what looked like the real winner
with around 20 laps to go. with 2 others in tow, nikki
wangsgard gained as much as 30 seconds on the peleton. but
hub racing had numbers and liz leyden initiated the chase,
and sheba farrin took the reigns. every hub rider took a
turn and the gap tumbled. for almost half of the 35 laps,
the break sat out front until elizabeth morse hill finished
it off with a burst at around 9 laps remaining.
meanwhile, though close to over with shontell's lead
mounting, shontell and veronica went for the points
sprints. veronica kept it close and the 2 exchanged sprint
wins out of the field. shontell plus 2 then veronica plus 1
back. shontell now has a 10 point lead for the red jersey,
with veronica squarely in 2nd. this competition indeed will
come to sunday, and shontell will need to cross in front of
veronica just once in the 3 sprints to clinch.
Taiwan's Hsiao-chia tseng made the counter to the yellow
jersey capture and flew for the line with 8 laps to go.
josie giddens tried to make the bridge for hub racing, and
almost had her until the rain started down. hub racing had
done the work to bring it back and josie burned her legs to
try and pay off the team for its efforts. but the quick
pourdown brought oil to the road surface, and josie took a
slip in the sharp turn into the climb, and was back in the
field. Hsiao-chia tseng rode solo for a grand stage win,
and the rest came to a field sprint for 2nd place.
hub, having done the chase, had little left for the sprint.
elizabeth morse hill hung on for 5th with sheba farrin 7th
and amy mcguire behind in the last money spot at 15th.
josie held on for gc points at 17th.
sunday should be fast and wide open. riders will attempt to
break and the peleton might let it go for while. but only
the right combination will be allowed up the road all the
way to the finish. there are still some money spots in gc
up for grabs, including josie's 10th place. the red jersey
points, though almost settled, are not quite done. and
everyone wants that final stage win.
