sunday july 26th 2009
Bravo Cucina Italiana Whitefish Bay Classic

with general classification spots sewn up, hub racing's
sheba farrin and amy mcguire took off for the chicago
criterium early in the afternoon. they took 7th and 9th,
winning plenty of money for the team to make the trip
worthwhile. but they wanted to make 2 races on sunday, and
with a single lap warm down and a no bathroom stop, they
jumped in the car and headed back to wisconsin for the
super week finally, making the 2nd start line by a mere 4
minutes. it was the 2nd double up of the 2 weeks for hub.
josie giddens won the scratch race at the kenosha track
last tuesday evening.

back in whitefish bay, the women were anxious for the
start, and the peleton crashed on the very first lap, with
bth amy mcguire and veronica martinez of hub racing needing
to take free laps. (josie stayed upright this time). as is
typical on the last day of a tour, everyone wanted a shot
off the front. Jeannie Kuhajek of team mack was extremely
aggressive, making multiple attacks. she needed a few
points to move into the top 10 in the gc. but it was
josie's spot she was fighting for so hub chased her down
every time. and with 3 sprints left for hub's veronica
martinez to take a shot at gaining the 10 points to catch
colavita's shontell gauthier in the red jersey competition,
hub racing fought to control the race early.

shontell was back in the pack coming into the first sprint,
and veronica had the leadout. but shontell has shown her
strength all tour, and this was no different. taking
veronica by a clean bike length, shontell clinched the red
jersey.

going into the 2nd sprint, shontell sat at the front out of
the turn, and hub sat up on their handle bars behind her.
but the peleton refused shontell a parade sprint, and
suprised her as several riders from other teams jumped to
the line for final day mid-race glory. shontell just had to
smile, her work for the red jersey was already done, as was
veronica's for 2nd place.

break after break followed, but hub wanted a chance for the
stage win with josie or elizabeth morse hill. hub's liz
leyden chased down several breaks, and then sheba farrin
drove the front for 5 straight laps, trying to set up a
last lap attack from her teammates. but when she came off,
everyone in the field went for the attack, and the result
was an extreme acceleration. no attack was going if
everyone went.

MEI-YU HSIAO of EAM EXUSTAR TAIWAN Taiwan took the
explosive field sprint, with the red jersey of shontell and
her yellow jersey teammate nikki wangsgard right behind
her. hub went in the money at 6, 12, and 13 with josie,
elizabeth and sheba. amy and liz both snagged a couple more
gc points at 16 and 19.

in the final tally, hub racing put 4 women in the gc top 10
including 1 on the podium, took the 2nd place podium spot
in the sprints, had two 2nd place stage podiums, and a
stage win.
