august roundup
the early august races in north carolina (presbytarian
charlotte and hanes park) saw the final chances for hub
racing's liz leyden and josie giddens in the USA before
heading back to aussie and new zealand. josie took the
team's best shot at sunday's hanes park crit in
winston-salem. with 3 to go, she moved up the left side of
the peleton up the small climb, with several teammates
behind ready to sweep her wheel and give her a shot off the
front. but coming off a dynamic super week, josie and the
orange were marked a little too carefully by a charging
field looking for a sprint. josie was going no where off
the front and would have to be satisfied with the several
podiums and victories she had already gained in the usa on
both road and track. sheba would score NRC points in
charlotte in one of the fastest races of the year, and hub
got some great tv press with amy mcguire:

the NC races also served as the final warm up for the
national championships in downers grove IL the following
weekend. hub racing took maybe its best real shot ever when
we launched elizabeth morse hill with just under 9 laps to
go (photos). tibco had been in every break away, trying to
force colavita to chase. but hub racing's surprise flyer
with elizabeth turned the tables and tibco had to shut it
down with little help from other teams. elizabeth gained as
many as 12 seconds on the field and came through the start
line twice alone off the front. tibco finished off the
chase with six to go and led the field for the final laps
before taking a final flyer of their own trying to set up
brooke miller. but colavita took control at the very end
for tina pic and brought her first to the last turn. tina
sprinted up the right side against the fence for another
national title to her credit.
meanwhile, hub's veronica martinez took off for puerto rico
(the argentina native not eligible for the usa nationals)
where she took the 2nd place podium spot. amy mcguire
joined veronica on her return to the mainland for the chris
thater memorial in bingingham ny where amy gained a few NRC
points in the fast downhill sprint with 25th place.
next up for hub racing:
the gateway cup tour of missouri labor day weekend with amy
and elizabeth. and watch for laura hopcroft at the cycle
messenger world championships in tokyo. also coming soon
will be the announcement of our full cross schedule.
