laura in tokyo
hub's laura hopcroft took another stab at the cycle
messenger world championships in tokyo this past week. the
week started with a ride from kyoto to tokyo to tire the
racers out before the competition even began. the race
itself was more complicated then ever this year, partly
becasue of the japanese language. and the tokyo crew has
been coming to the cmwc's for over a decade and has
struggled with the english, german, spanish, and other
tounges we have thrown at them. so it was their turn to
throw a new language at the international messenger
community. qualifying sent the riders out with multiple
deliveries, choices, time limits and map decisions,
utilizing the single paper form per delivery that the tokyo
messengers negotiate every day. laura made her way through
the maze to 11th place, just one spot out of the finals. "i
raced clean, and hard" she said afterwords. "now its time
to go see the tokyo sites".

her result would be one of the best from canada, and the
best amongst her traveling group. (always nice to beat your
friends!)
for 2010 the cmwc is in gusatemala, and 2011 was awarded to
warsaw.
