Sugarloaf Road Race and Criterium
First up was the Sugarloaf Road Race. We were in the same wave as the Category 4 men. Lucky for me I was able to race with my step-son, Jake! This race was probably one of the most difficult days I have ever had on the bike simply because of the extreme temperatures, and possibly due to the fact that it was the weekend after my 24 hour race?! Within the first two laps, out of four, I had already started to get the goose bumps. Thank goodness for the Colavita junior team for all of their feed ups to me!! I actually took on two additional bottles during the 44 mile race. Not only were the temperatures extremely hot, the course was tough consisting of both hills and wind. After riding two laps by myself I was able to hold on for 2 place! Going into the criterium I was told that the course was very tough. To me that is probably good considering I love to race crits! Indeed, the course was challenging; it had nine turns and a couple of bends in 1.3 miles and again it was extremely hot. With 7 laps to go I got caught in a crash that bent a spoke or two and also broke my bike. Fortunately I was on last years bike which allowed me to get my spare wheel and put it in my frame kind of crooked and finish the race. It was a good thing too because I was able to win! Unfortunately, my good friend who crashed into me ended up breaking her pelvis, but luckily will be back on the bike in a week or two. So overall, not bad for a weekend of racing, one 2nd place and one 1st place!
Two more weekends until the state championship road races and then I will get ready for the cross season to begin. More news from Florida to follow...
